The parade is small but it filled with everything a parade needs. . . flags, motorcycle police, firetrucks, marching bands, old cars and homemade floats.
It is a great sight to see. Every year it gets bigger. Anyone can be in the parade. Kids and families dress up, decorate their bike/strollers, etc. and head down the parade route. The thing that makes the parade so special for our kids is that those walking/riding down the parade route throw candy out to the spectators. My kids have the best time running out to grab candy. This year the kids had something special to look forward to because their cousin, Camilla, was riding in the parade courtesy of a remote controlled car that her dad drove. She had a great time waving and watching all the people.
After the parade we headed back to Grandma and Grandpa's house to play. The kids started out playing tennis but quickly decided they wanted to swim even though it was overcast outside. We figured the sun would come out soon. However, Mother Nature had other ideas. Rain came instead of the sun. So, we convinced the kids that we should go in for lunch and try swimming later when the sun came out. Sadly, the sun never did come out long enough to make it a good swimming day. Regardless of the weather they did make it back into the pool later in the afternoon.
They spent a lot of time playing tennis and basketball. They even got all the guys to go out and play kickball with them. 
We watched movies and played card games. It was a very leisurely day. The girls talked and the guys tried to find sports to watch on TV. We had a great 4th of July BBQ and then watched fireworks together. Jackson was a little nervous about the noise level but as long as I covered his ears he had a great time watching. 
When we got home, the kids went right to bed. When I saw all the newly legalized fireworks in the sky I ran up to get the kids to let them come see, but the girls were already asleep. They had had a long, fun day. Dalton was still up so he came out with us and watched the sky with us for a few minutes. It was neat to see all those fireworks in the sky, but living next to a big empty field, I still get nervous as I hear and see all the hot, smouldering debris raining down on our house and into the field. Still, they are much more impressive than the dippy little fountains we are used to.

I am not usually overly patriotic, but it is nice to have a special day to think about and celebrate the United States of America!
